Say Hello to Mikayla!

Mikayla being held by her father Garrett

In family related news, my sister gave birth to her first born daughter Mikayla Grace Vermaat at 1:17 am this morning!

That’s right folks: Yours truly is now an Uncle!  I guess I should probably brush up on the Uncle’s Handbook to spoiling your niece shouldn’t I?

The Numbers Behind the Digital Lifestyle

While working on my 31 Days to Build a Better Blog challenge, I happened to come across The Next Web’s article The Numbers Behind the Digital Lifestyle.  The article (which I recommend you to read) talks about how technology has changed our culture and liberated the work force.

Take a look at this infographic below and ask yourself, are you already living a digital lifestyle?

Happy New Years from TheAccordance!

To my readers, may I offer a word of advice as you set your new years resolutions:

  1. Do your homework!  If you wanted to lose weight you wouldn’t just go work out, you’d want to research your diet too.  Make sure you know everything involved to succeed with your resolution.
  2. Plan out your resolution.  Most times you can’t wing success.
  3. You should expect your resolution to be a year-long commitment.  Break down your resolution into manageable steps & set these as goals throughout the year.  Keep yourself accountable by striving to meet or even exceed these goals (or better yet, re-adjust if you do exceed your goal to keep the resolution challenging!)

Remember, today is the first day, of the first month, of your year.  You’re in a race against time, and the clock is ticking.  How are your New Year Resolutions going thus far?

Veterans Day: In His Honor

My Grandfather, Alfred Mainwaring II

In honor of Veterans Day today I wanted to share the story of my grandfather, Alfred Mainwaring II, who passed away earlier this year.

Grandpa Mainwaring (also known at times as Sarge) was retired military with the rank of Master Sergeant. He most proudly served his country for 29 years logging time in the Navy, Air Force and retiring from the Army. Only minutes after turning 16 years of age he began his military journey serving on the USS Missouri, a mine sweeper, during WW II. He also served during Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm. Despite the fact he was branded by the government as a “100% service-related disabled veteran”, my grandfather was quoted only weeks before his passing he was “ready to re-up” once again. “I figure I will do a desk job”, he reasoned.

While my grandfather may be gone, I consider him to be one of my heroes and still draw inspiration from the memories I have of him.

If you haven’t already, take a moment today and thank the people you know who have served (or still serving) in our country’s military.

Reading: Steve Jobs

A couple of weeks ago I started to read Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson during my morning commute to work.  While I’ve only progressed thus far to chapter seven, I have found many parallels between not only myself, but several of my fraternity brothers from college who are also motivated to succeed.  I’ll share more thoughts about the book when I finish it, but in the mean time consider adding this to your Christmas list.

Have you already started reading the book?  Have you discovered similarities between yourself and Jobs?  Share your thoughts!
